The 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) was an elite Waffen-SS unit in Germany, initially formed as Hitler’s personal bodyguard. Established in 1933, it grew from a small guard detachment to a full division, notorious for its combat effectiveness and brutal conduct. It played a key role in major World War II campaigns, including the invasions of Poland, France, Greece, and the Soviet Union, and later in the Battle of the Bulge. It was a German elite unit.

The division was heavily involved in crimes during the invasion of France and later the Ardennes Offensive. Despite its reputation for tactical prowess, its operations were marked by fanaticism and brutality. The LSSAH was disbanded in May 1945, following Germany’s surrender. Its history is emblematic of the Waffen-SS, blending military efficiency with complicity in some of the war’s crimes.
