As the November election approaches, Democrats are increasingly concerned that overconfidence within the party, buoyed by Vice President Kamala Harris's honeymoon phase, could jeopardize her ability to withstand aggressive attacks. Strategists recognize that Harris, a far-left West Coast Democrat, will inevitably face tough questions about her record and must be prepared for any unexpected scandals or opposition tactics aimed at derailing her campaign.
“Every presidential campaign in modern history has faced an unforeseen crisis or world event, and Kamala Harris’s campaign will be no exception,” warned Fernand Amandi, a former strategist for President Obama, in a statement to The Hill. He cautioned against premature celebrations, stating, “Anyone measuring the drapes at the White House needs a serious reality check.”
While most swing state polls show Harris statistically tied with former President Donald Trump, a marked improvement from earlier surveys where Trump led President Joe Biden by nearly double digits, some Democrats remain wary. Tim Hogan, a Democratic strategist, noted that while the Harris-Walz campaign's trajectory is encouraging, “the political landscape can shift rapidly, and unforeseen events can quickly alter the course of an election.”
Despite the positive polling, Christy Setzer, another Democratic strategist, emphasized that the party remains cautiously optimistic, stating, “It all looks good, but we take nothing for granted.” Former Obama strategist Jim Messina echoed these sentiments, pointing to undecided voters as a key factor in what he describes as an “incredibly close” election.
Harris also faces additional challenges as the newly minted Democratic candidate. A recent poll revealed that 70 percent of registered Democrats and independents who voted for Biden in 2020 are largely unaware of Harris’s more controversial and radical positions. The 2024 election is expected to hinge on undecided independent working-class voters, with Harris's West Coast background potentially alienating voters in key Midwestern states. Meanwhile, Trump’s popularity has risen compared to 2020 and 2016, and Republican enthusiasm to vote for Trump has increased, according to CNN analyst Harry Enten. Enthusiasm among Democrats to vote for Harris, however, has slightly decreased compared to earlier support for Biden.
Trump’s favorability ratings are holding steady, with the RealClearPolitics average showing his approval just below its highest point in April, and FiveThirtyEight data reflecting a similar trend.
