3:54:04Now PlayingThe Minnesota Senate approved a bill Wednesday, March 29, that would fund several state agencies by $802 million dollars, which reflects a $30 million dollar reduction over current spending levels. The reduction would result in agency budget cuts of about 5 to 7 percent.
According to the bill author, Senator Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake, that despite the reduction, the bill affords agencies greater flexibility in managing their budgets. The bill also allocates additional funds for the state's AMBER Alert systems, cyber security efforts, and election equipment upgrades.
Key provisions in the bill include the creation of a Legislative Budget Office, which would assist lawmakers in identifying the costs of proposals, which currently is handled by Governor Mark Dayton's administration.
Senate DFL members failed to reallocate funds slated in the bill for the Minnesota House of Representatives to support improvements in Minnesota's veterans homes.
Differences between the Senate and House agency appropriations bill will be worked out in conference committee.
