32:39Now PlayingFollowing the latest budget news projecting a $1.5 billion dollar budget surplus for the 2020-21 biennium, Governor-elect Tim Walz and DFL lawmakers addressed the media, expressing caution and fiscal restraint despite the positive balance.
Governor-elect Tim Walz expressed his concern over items not factored into the forecast. "Some of the concerns that I have always had is that these do not factor in inflation. They do not factor in some of the changes that come with a volatile economy," he said. He added his concern over the use of one-time investments. "When we're talking about investments in education and health care and infrastructure, we're talking about generational investments."
Senator DFL Tax Lead Ann Rest also expressed caution regarding the surplus news. "What we need to be is very, very cautious...thinking that it can be used for ongoing commitments."
