2:10Now PlayingThe Senate Health and Human Services Committee held an informational meeting Wednesday, December 5, to review a report from Kurt Giesa of Oliver Wyman Associates on the impact of public health insurance options. In his presentation, Giesa indicated that as many as 50,000 Minnesotans would drop health insurance coverage under an expanded public health option.
According to Giesa, the unintended consequences of an expanded public option would result from the loss of reinsurance that currently helps lower premiums in the individual market. Because of the higher premiums, Geisa explained, many individuals would stop seeking insurance coverage.
Senator Tory Lourey, DFL-Kerrick, said the model that was used in the analysis is flawed, because it was based on experiences in Massachusetts. Committee chair Michelle Benson stressed that dealing with the factors behind high health care costs is essential to addressing the problem.
