In a welcome move, Jallikattu is now legal in Tamil Nadu. The state assembly passed a bill tabled by Chief Minister O Panneerselvam making the sport legal, effectively nullifying the ban on the traditional bull racing sport. Jallikattu was banned in 2014 after the Supreme Court deemed it illegal. This was in response to a PIL filed by animal rights activists saying that the sport amounted to cruelty against animals. Following widespread protests last week, the state were forced to being in an ordinance to hold the sport. At that time the Chief Minister had also promised to enact a law to make Jallikattu legal.
