4:18Now PlayingThe political crisis in Rajasthan bear striking similarities with how the Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh was toppled yet there are some important differences because of which this time Congress seems to have an upper hand in retaining power.
Both cases have young dynamic faces of the Congress party rebelling against a senior leader, for being sidelined and overshadowed. Both states had internal bickerings within the Congress party that blew over since the top leadership failed to heal the fissures within. And in both cases, it’s a senior leader getting insecure with the young Turk rising to equal them in rank and profile while the younger leader feeling limited in space to grow in power and prominence
The similarities, however, end there. The dynamics in Rajasthan are very different at many levels.
Unlike Kamal Nath, Ashok Gehlot has acted swiftly to guard the flock and arrest attrition. His numbers at the moment cross the majority mark even without the rebels. Kamal Nath had failed to restrict the depletion in numbers.
Secondly, unlike Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin Pilot is running a few MLAs short of the desired number that could bolster his bargaining power to topple the Gehlot govt.
So Gehlot is on the offensive using the anti-defection law to his advantage. He has managed to keep Pilot on the backfoot with the disqualification danger looming large on him which if ratified by the courts would mean further bringing down majority mark rendering Gehlot in a secure position with the numbers. Kamal Nath in his time seemed pretty helpless in countering the Scindia blitzkrieg!
So Scindia walked away with relative ease taking away a substantial number of MLAs to topple the govt within two weeks of the spat becoming public
Also at the centre, BJP was swift to embrace Scindia so Shivraj Singh Chouhan gets reinstated as the CM while Scindia gets catapulted to the position of a Member of parliament.
In Rajasthan, such a thing does not work out simply because, to begin with Pilot wants that CMs post for himself. Also, he is clear and categorical about not joining BJP which complicates matters in terms of him getting a suitable position to resurrect himself from the current mess.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan BJP seems to be in no hurry to dethrone Gehlot. In fact, Vasundhara Raje seems disinclined to allow Pilot to come into the Rajasthan BJP camp especially if he is harbouring CM ambitions. In contrast, there was absolute unanimity within the BJP when it came to Madhya Pradesh which made things much easier.
