The Ever Given, a container ship that was longer than the Eiffel Tower, ran aground in Egypt's Suez Canal, stranding dozens of ships attempting to transit between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. According to sources familiar with the situation, the canal could be closed for days.
The Suez Canal, which is 193 kilometers (120 miles) long and used by oil tankers delivering crude from the Middle East to Europe and North America, is one of the world's busiest waterways. Around 12% of world trade and 8% of liquefied natural gas, as well as one million barrels of oil per day, pass through the canal.
