3:41Now PlayingAs the results of the byelection for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat were still being tallied, Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Dimple Yadav (6,17,625 votes) had amassed a sizable lead of more than 2.5 lakh votes over her closest rival Raghuraj Singh Shakya (3,29,489 votes) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On December 5, elections were held for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat. After SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav passed away on October 10 of this year, a byelection for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha was required. Dimple, Akhilesh Yadav's wife and Mulayam's "badi bahu," has served as an MP for Kannauj thrice in the past. Dimple was first elected as an MP in 2012, winning a seat in Kannauj that had been held by her husband Akhilesh before he assumed the position of CM of Uttar Pradesh. The BJP's Subrat Pathak won the seat in the 2019 LS elections, but she lost it in 2014.
