Mumbai Air Quality Index Worse Than Delhi, Experts Blame Changing Wind Patterns | Mirror Metro

In this episode of Mirror Metro, the host Shreya Dhoundial will be discussing how at the beginning of this year's last month, Mumbai's Air Quality Index (AQI) almost fell into the "Very Poor" category. On Thursday evening, the System of Air Quality Forecast and Research (SAFAR) dashboard reported an AQI of 293, which is considered "Poor" and is only eight points away from the "Very Poor" classification. The decrease follows the city's past week's 'Good' AQI reading of 41. According to SAFAR, an AQI reading between 0 and 50 is deemed "Good," 51 to 100 is "Satisfactory," 101 to 200 is "Moderate," 200 to 300 is "Poor," 301 to 400 is "Very Poor," and 400 and above is "Severe." An AQI of 290 was observed in Colaba and Mazagaon, 283 in Malad, and 280 in Chembur. Bhandup recorded an AQI of 211 whereas BKC recorded a reading of 266. The AQI in Borivali was 124, followed by 183 in Worli and Andheri. Climate experts blamed the present weather for the poor AQI.

"This is not an overnight phenomenon, we've seen a systematic destruction of Mumbai's natural environment over the last few years,” said Zoru Bhathena, Activist.

"Construction activities in coastal corridors of Mumbai and metro projects have led to pollution accumulation in the air. Stagnation of winds phenomenon is trapping all that," said Dr Gufran Beig, Founder Project Director SAFAR.
