Roland Martin sits down with historian Jeanne Theoharis to discuss her book, King of the North: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Life of Struggle Outside the South. The conversation challenges the familiar story that Dr. King’s fight against racism was primarily a Southern struggle and examines his work confronting segregation, police brutality, housing discrimination, economic inequality, and white liberal resistance across Northern and Western cities.
Theoharis explains how King repeatedly called out the myth that racism was confined to the South, while Roland connects that history to the role of media, Black political power, Malcolm X, Coretta Scott King, and the continuing fight against systemic racism. They also explore how Black-owned media documented struggles that mainstream white media often minimized, distorted, or ignored.
The discussion reveals a fuller picture of King as a national movement leader who supported local organizers, challenged Northern segregation, and pushed allies to choose justice over comfort.
