Instead, across the Atlantic world, many emancipation policies redirected systems of racial domination into new forms of political, economic, and social control.

Drawing from histories spanning the Caribbean, the United States, Africa, and Europe, the conversation explores colonialism, racial slavery, reparations, Indigenous dispossession, and the unfinished struggle for liberation. Dr. Manjapra also examines the enduring "ghosts" of empire—historical forces that continue shaping institutions, public memory, and racial inequality long after slavery's formal abolition.
