Sixty-one years after President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law, Roland Martin says the fight over Black voting power is far from over.
Roland traces the modern assault on voting rights through Shelby County v. Holder and subsequent efforts to weaken the law, arguing that the attack intensified after Barack Obama became president and Black political power expanded at the federal, state and local levels.
He connects the ballot to economic power, education and opportunity, reaching back through Reconstruction, Jim Crow and the civil rights movement to explain why Black voting rights have repeatedly been targeted. His warning is direct: “This war on Black America is real.”
Roland also challenges Black voters across generations not to take the ballot for granted, arguing that the power of the vote has always been feared precisely because of what Black communities can accomplish when they wield it.
