What is Individualism

Individualism has a long history in terms of its philosophical foundation. It started in 18th century France. France at that time was adopting the practice of mercantilism. At that time, the French school of economists, called physiocrats, criticized mercantilism or government regulation of trade and industry. They declared that the production of national wealth should not be controlled by government laws. Rather it should be left alone to the individuals. They famously said, “Laissez faire, laissez passer”. This initiated a wave of individualism in its earlier years. Then Adam Smith and his followers perfected this system. He argued that traders, workers, and employers know their interests better. Hence, there is no need for government to interfere in the lives of individuals. Mill also presented his theory of Individual liberty. He also argued that government can promote the happiness of individuals by not interfering in their lives.

There are a few basic principles of Individualism. The individualists believe that the state is a necessary evil. The state only exists to prevent the crime. Second, the functions of the state are negative and restricted. Third, the state is the end, and the individual is the mean. The state exists for the welfare of the individuals and not for itself. And lastly, individuals have full liberty and rights to live as they think best. The state cannot regulate the lives of individuals. The theory of individualism is important in contemporary times as well. The year 2024 and the coming years are witnessing the growth of this belief among many individuals. But the importance of the state in the individual life can also not be ignored.
