as posted by the channelImperialism is the policy of a powerful state to conquer or dominate weaker states and countries. Imperialism in this sense is having military power. When a country becomes military strong then it conquers or dominates weaker countries. Modern imperialism is different from old imperialism. Modern imperialism or neo-imperialism has economic, political, and social aspects.
The phenomenon of colonialism is different from that of imperialism. In colonialism, a country physically subjugates another country employing force. The invading country imposes its own laws and regulations and settles there permanently.
There are several factors which contribute to the phenomenon of imperialism. The first is the increase in the military might of any country. Second is the political stability. Third is the economic dominance of a certain country. And lastly, the intellectual dominance. There may be other factors as well but these factors are the most important ones in the development of imperialism. There are certain theories regarding the phenomenon of imperialism as well. This includes; the missionary or racial theory of imperialism and the Marxist or Leninist theory of imperialism. These theories describe imperialism in their own ways.
In Neo-Imperialism, the dominant countries control the weaker countries by different means. The World Bank and IMF are one of the perfect examples of this. Strong countries influence the IMF and the IMF gives loans to only those countries which implement Structural Adjustment Programs. This program benefits only advanced countries. Similarly, the dominant countries support certain political factions in weaker countries. They also manipulate elections in those countries to bring like-minded politicians into power.
