This labor day, let’s take a look at one of the biggest ongoing labor disputes in the country: the Nabisco Strike. You may have seen calls to boycott the snack maker online (often accompanied by the slogan, “no contract, no snacks”) as this strike has been going on since August 10th.
The now nationwide strike began in Portland, Oregon, with 200 unionized workers, but now it has spread to almost 1000 workers across factories in Colorado, Illinois, Georgia, and Virginia. The reason workers are striking? Nabisco is trying to negotiate a new union contract that would offer less overtime pay and make it easier to offshore American union jobs, even though some workers have been taking 16 hour shifts in order to oversee increased production due to pandemic demand for snacks. What’s more, the union is fighting to restore a pension that was replaced a few years ago with a 401k.
