Portland is known nationwide as a very liberal, hippy dippy, live free and climb large rocks kind of city, but it also has a darker underbelly. To answer this question, and more, The Bitchuation Room was joined at our LIVE SHOW in Portland by Erick K. Ward and Mac Smiff.
The history and demographics of Portland, and Oregon more generally, give us some clues about why this is. Demographically, The Black population of the state of Oregon is just 1.9% Black, but hate crime statistics show that Black people in Oregon are the victims of more than a third of all hate crimes. And with gentrification, often perpetrated by well-meaning liberals, the black population of Portland has dwindled.
Historically, before it was ever admitted to the U.S. as a state, Oregon was founded as a “White’s Only” territory. In 1844 it passed its first Black exclusion law, and followed this up with more exclusion laws in later years. Black people in Oregon were ineligible to own property or make contracts, which essentially makes it impossible to live. Obviously Oregon isn’t the same state it used to be, but let’s keep in mind how the structures of power we currently operate in were all created during a period of explicit state endorsed racist discrimination and those legacies continue to shape the destinies of all the people who live there.
