7:58Now PlayingShould the U.S. government, and more specifically the Biden Administration, treat the white supremacist threat the same way it treats threats from so-called “Islamic extremists?” We put this question to our two distinguished guests at our Portland Live Show: Eric K Ward and Mac Smiff.
The U.S. is obsessed with this notion of “both sides” to every problem. If white supremacy is a problem, then the government must equally go after so-called “Black extremist” organizations and other leftist groups. This is probably the lens with which the Biden administration is approaching this existential threat to a multi-racial democracy, and it’s fundamentally flawed. There is no comparison to make, because the power imbalance between extremist groups on the right and left could fit between the earth and the moon.
If they wanted to tackle the problem in the correct way, the Biden Administration should understand that these right wing groups are an existential threat to the lives of its most vulnerable populations. Portland is a microcosm of the U.S. more generally, and this “both sides” paradigm is exactly the tact that this supposedly highly liberal city has taken.
