Even with a massive head start, and being the central location for the research and development of the COVID vaccines, the US is now falling behind many of its western peer nations in terms of % of adults vaccinated. What’s going on here?
Professor Young, a Communication and Political Science Scholar at the University of Delaware, and one of this week’s guests on The Bitchuation Room, believes that the current moment of heightened uncertainty is the primary driver of people’s turn to conspiracy. During times of uncertainty and threat, folks latch onto whatever makes sense to them, even if it isn’t back up by evidence.
If one of these vaccine hesitant folks are in your family, how do you deal with it, and what do you think led them there? It’s difficult to know how to approach your relationships with people like that, but there are a few strategies you can try. Before you go trying to convince anyone else, though, make sure you feel up to the challenge. It’s not going to be easy, and you’re not doing anyone any favors if you break your own self down in the process.
The Bitchuation Room was joined by Professor Dannagal Young. Professor Young is a Communication and Political Science professor at the University of Delaware where she studies the content, audience, and effects of nontraditional political information. Her book "Irony and Outrage" examines satire and outrage as the logical extensions of the respective psychological profiles of liberals and conservatives. Follow her on Twitter here
