2:37Now PlayingIs the future of COVID detection dogs with jobs? Dogs are used to smell for all kinds of things at airports; drugs, bomb residue, BO, whatever the case may be. This latest dog innovation is pretty spectacular, though.
Miami International Airport has instituted a novel COVID detection protocol: bringing in COVID smelling dogs. This policy has been implemented in other countries such as the United Arab Emirates, but this marks their first use by a governmental organization in the United States.
If you are picked out by the dog as smelling like COVID, the airport will ask you to take a rapid COVID test to ensure that you’re not positive. According to a study by Florida International University, dogs achieved 96 to 99 percent accuracy rates for detecting the virus after about 7 weeks of intensive training. Dog have roughly 60 times as many smell receptors as compared to humans, but dang this is impressive.
