The Senate Hates Americans

Is the Senate where all progressive legislation goes to die? During the recent congressional negotiations Democrats have had conservative Democratic Senator after consertative Democratic Senator object to just about anything worth anything. The Senate was once known as the purest expression of deliberative democracy, but these days the only thing it knows how to do is stall, worsen, and abrogate its responsibilities. Yet even since its inception it was always meant to represent the minority of Americans and protect them against the unwashed masses.

It’s looking more and more likely that the most expansive provisions of Biden’s Build Back Better act are going to get thrown out the window. This is largely due to the intransigence of Senators who have been too busy attending big dollar donor fundraising dinners, and cruising around on the yacht bought for them by fossil fuel executives, to actually negotiate with Democrats who desperately want to do something … anything.

Lowering prescription drug prices? Think of Big Pharma! Free community college tuition? Nah, maybe later. Paid family leave? No, it’ll create an “entitlement” attitude, according to Joe Manchin. Investments in public housing during a nationwide housing shortage and affordability crisis? Too expensive, but let’s keep giving the military billions more funding than they even ask for.
