You’d think that they’d understand that their wealth, which was unjustly earned since we stopped taxing their assets in the 1970s would give them a bit of self-awareness. But you’d be very wrong!
Our guest on the program this week, Doug Henwood, explains that the elite aren’t at all interested in long-term planning, because short term (quarterly) profits are the only thing in their worlds that actually hold them accountable in any way. It’s terrible for the earth, for the working class, and just about everyone else, but under our current capitalist structure short term profits are the only thing that matters to anyone. In short, the ultra wealthy are out of control.
The most perverse part of this equation is that these folks, who are leading the businesses that are causing global warming, are the ones who will won’t feel its future effects. They’ll be able to fly off to their secret underground New Zealand bunkers or Elysium while the rest of us are getting boiled in rising seawater.

He hosts Behind the News, a weekly radio show that originates on KPFA, Berkeley, that is rebroadcast on several other stations across the U.S., and has a worldwide audience via podcast.
