Bernie Sanders Warns: Democrats Need to Inspire Their Base

Have Democrats lost the thread? According to recent polls, Joe Biden is polling in the mid to low 30% range for his approval rating. Things are dire for Democrats: President Biden wasn’t able to get congress to lift the filibuster and pass Build Back Better or new voting rights protections, and for some reason this feels like a lame duck period.

If you’re a centrist, the Joe Biden administration has gone perfect on paper. There was moderate stimulus spending in the beginning, sure, but since then the only thing that has really passed (besides a record military spending bill) has been a moderate bipartisan infrastructure package. Democrats didn’t touch healthcare, immigration, or any pass any sustained increases in social spending, so everyone should be happy right? In search of someone else to blame, centrist Democrats are now complaining that it’s the people who are loudly advocating for their beliefs and pushing the party to do anything that are to blame for the divisive climate.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders had some tough words for Democrats. He said they “are not going to win the elections in 2022 unless our base is energized and ordinary people understand what we are fighting for, and how we are different than the Republicans… That is not the case now… clearly, the current strategy is failing and we need a major course correction.” Child tax credits, Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, dropping federal student debt, there’s a whole buffet of ways Democrats in power can show people that they’re worth voting for. Will they before the midterms?
