The WINS Nobody Talks About In the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill

Did you know that the infrastructure bill passed had $90 billion for public transportation? According to this week’s guest Antonia Juhasz, an American oil and energy analyst, writer, and activist, this was a record level of spending for public transportation like trains, subways, and buses. The bill also included funding for the hardening of our energy infrastructure and building out local energy infrastructure that will face monumental climate issues in the coming years.

While we’ll definitely need more than $90 billion to reduce emissions to survival level, public tranportation is key. The fastest way to change people’s relationship with consuming fossil fuels is to get them out of their cars and into sidewalks, buses, and trains, which can quickly and efficiently transport people. Still, the shift requires an immense amount of capital to begin to change. Also contained within the bill was funding to remove lead pipes, something which millions of Black and Brown Americans deal with.

All of this is new spending where previously there had been no movement. This will stimulate an untold number of new union jobs in critically needed industries. Despite the promise of this bill, the Build Back Better bill could do even more. The end state of Build Back Better was already a massive compromise with the corporate wing of the Democratic party, and even that couldn’t get past the intransigent centrists and Republicans.
