If you were Democratic leadership, what would be your next move? BBB has failed, but recently, Democrats have pivoted towards breaking up the larger Build Back Better legislation into smaller pieces in order to try to get those passed.
Will this strategy even work? According to this week’s guest, Antonia Juhasz, an American oil and energy analyst, writer, and activist, the incentives for Manchin and Synema remain the same: the longer they hold onto their no’s, the more money they’ll get from lobbyists. Of course, it’s worth remembering that the very same provisions that Manchin now opposes, he previously helped craft.
Bernie Sanders, on the other hand, wants to force a vote on BBB in order to get Senators on record as supporting something or supporting nothing. Bernie’s gamble is that it’ll show Democratic voters that they’re serious about trying to do stuff, and hopefully reward that with their votes in the upcoming election.
