Is removing someone from YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, or any other online platform, taking away someone’s right to free speech? Is getting kicked out of a bar the same thing as being banned from drinking?
On the one hand, yes these are private corporations that own their private platforms and therefore can enforce (or not enforce) a certain standard, so of course they can kick people off their platforms. More important, however, is whose free speech “we” are interested in protecting. So called free speech maximalists aren’t out there protesting when pro-Palestinan voices are silenced, or when books are being banned from American libraries for mentioning the horrors of slavery. Most often, we see “in defense of free speech” coming from those who are only interested in protecting a certain kind of person’s free speech.
