This week, two major addresses by public figures featured cringe as central items. This made us want to ask ourselves, and our esteemed panel of guests, what parts of your life do you now look back on as “cringe?”
In May, Taylor Swift delivered the commencement address for the New York University (NYU) classes of 2022. In it, she told graduates to embrace being cringe, because “my experience has been that my mistakes led to the best things in my life. And being embarrassed when you mess up is part of the human experience. Getting back up, dusting yourself off and seeing who still wants to hang out with you afterward and laugh about it? That’s a gift.”
Also in May, at a speech at The George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas, Connecticut native George W. Bush gave a speech denouncing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq.” Wait.. no he meant Ukraine. This unreal and extremely cringe gaffe was met with nothing but laughter from the audience. Bush, who famously stole the 2000 election with the help of a conservative SCOTUS, also said that the electoral system in Russia is rigged.
