9:57Now PlayingWhen Trump endorsed candidates lose a Republican primary, does Trump himself lose? Unfortunately, not really. The Republican primaries these days are so thoroughly Trumpian that these races are mostly a contest to see who can string together the most artful praise for their dear leader, regardless of whether or not he endorsed you or your opponent.
In Pennsylvania, Trump endorsed fellow reality TV star Dr. Mehmet Oz, who rose to fame thanks to the Oprah Winfrey show and his own subsequent pseudoscience based daytime TV talk show. Why did Trump endorse this political newcomer over a more “qualified” opponent? It’s not entirely clear, maybe reality-TV star solidarity, maybe the thought that Oz has a good shot with suburban Pennsylvania women.
In the primary election earlier this month, despite having the endorsement of Trump, Oz didn’t get enough support to outright win the Penn. primary. A similar dynamic is playing out in other races across the country as well. You’d think that Trump’s endorsement would be enough to let any Republican win in a thoroughly Trumpy primary, but it seems like Republican voters don’t care all that much what he has to say. Oz did eventually go on to win, but we’ll see how things go in the general.
