Gender affirming, as defined by the Association of American Medical Colleges, “encompasses a range of social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and affirm an individual’s gender identity” when it conflicts with the gender they were assigned at birth. The interventions help transgender people align various aspects of their lives — emotional, interpersonal, and biological — with their gender identity.” For many doctors, this type of care is a necessity no less important than helping someone with diabetes get insulin or anything of that nature.
Meanwhile, Alabama has recently passed a law that would give 10 years in prison for performing gender affirming care on a youth. Other states have followed suit. Although this fight is starring with banning this treatment for youths, let’s not kid ourselves. Once they’re finished taking it from kids, they’re going to try to take it away from anyone else.
