With car accidents on the rise, Karen meltdowns, and NIMBYs waiving their guns around, it seems the world may have hardened a little over the past three years. Francesca and her guest Jack O’Brien talk about the NBA semi-finals and how even otherwise fans have turned into haters.
We theorize about whether people are generally unhappier and how it's coming out in strange ways—for example we can get angry about injured players in basketball to avoid actually complaining about the dregs of daily capitalism. Is it social media? Brain inflammation? Existential dread?
People used to hold doors open for each other, offer a friendly nod, or even crack a joke while waiting in line at the grocery store. Now, it's more like a race to see who can dodge eye contact the fastest or who can let out the most exaggerated sigh while waiting for the self-checkout machine to scan their groceries. Maybe it's time to remember that kindness and laughs are contagious too.
