Workers Force UPS into Historic Deal

Will the Teamsters at UPS continue the hot labor summer?

On July 25th, the Teamsters “reached the most historic tentative agreement for workers in the history of UPS” before their contract deadline at the end of the month. If UPS and the Teamsters let the contract expire, the nearly 340,000 workers would have gone strike.

We talk with Teddy Ostrow, host of The Upsurge Podcast a podcast about UPS, the Teamsters & the future of the American labor movement, produced in partnership with In These Times magazine about the breaking news, how has the media has portrayed this fight, and what’s at stake whether or not workers at UPS go on strike.

The agreement gives existing part-timers a raise, starting them at $21 per hour immediately— existing part-time workers will receive a 48 percent average total wage increase over the next five years. It would end forced overtime and require air conditioning the delivery vans. However, the negotiations may not be over, the UPS locals and rank and file will meet over the next month to review and vote on the tentative agreement

Teamsters could still walk off the job if membership finds the contract unsatisfactory and participate in one of the largest strikes at a single employer in decades.
