The members of SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA writers on the picket lines after their guild’s contract expired last week. This is the first dual strike of its kind, where the unions representing both actors and writers in Hollywood have struck together, in over 60 years. The unions are protesting low pay and quality of life, citing the effects of streaming.
The unions also take issue with the studios’ proposals for using artificial intelligence tools in production. Acting in Hollywood is obviously highly competitive, and many actors struggle to find consistent work. This irregularity in employment can lead to significant income fluctuations, making it difficult to plan for the future or maintain financial stability.
This instability has been furthered by the so-called gig-ifcation of film and TV. Through streaming actors receive residuals, according to SAG-AFTRA, they are compensated at a significantly lower rate for streaming projects. “As you know, over the past decade, your compensation has been severely eroded by the rise of the streaming ecosystem,” SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said in an open letter to union members on Thursday before the strike.
Meanwhile, Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, said the actors' demands were "not realistic", further saying they are "adding to the set of the challenges that this business is already facing.” Which is funny coming from a multimillionaire. How will you support striking actors?
