No, Donald Trump’s felon status is not going to endear himself to Black Americans, not after everything he's said and done. Trump has a long history of racist comments and behaviors, from saying the N word behind the scenes on The Apprentice, to discriminating against Black apartment seekers in the 1970s, and calling for New York to reinstate the death penalty in the 1980s when it came to the innocent "Central Park Five." Trump’s rolling out a sneaker line or touting the injustices of the justice system don’t suddenly erase who he is.
Regardless, Trump and his team do seem to be making an effort, and over his birthday weekend Trump will head to Detroit to try to win over Black voters. Maybe he’ll bring along his pal Tim Scott, who is leading a $14 million campaign targeting Black and Latino voters to support Trump this election season. “As an African American born and raised in the Deep South who had concerns about our justice system as it relates to race, I'm now seeing it play out from a partisan perspective," said Scott. Perhaps that’ll earn him a VP spot, good for you, Tim!
