7:35Now PlayingWhen he ran for president in 2020, Joe Biden had the overwhelming support of Gen-Z, a generation roughly defined as folks who were born between the late 1990s and 2010s. This time around, they’re sleeping on sleepy Joe. According to a recent article by the Washington Post, a number of prominent Gen-Z influencers have actively turned against Biden, primarily but not exclusively over his handling of Gaza. While they are not supporting Trump, their discomfort with the president could mean less young people heading to the polls.
What seems to be different in 2024 versus 2020 is that Biden was open to much of the progressive criticism levied against him. During his campaign and the first few months in office, he seemed to have deeply internalized the left critique against his presidency, and (however imperfectly) worked to enact progressive policies at home and abroad. What has followed since those early days, however, has been one disappointment to the next. It was under a Biden presidency that Roe was overturned, and there remains no hope of reestablishing the protections afforded to women and pregnant people. While Biden ended the occupation of Afghanistan, he has overseen and actively supported an ongoing genocide in Gaza and the West Bank. Young people want to believe a better future is possible. Right now, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who thinks that’s possible among those under 30.
