Well that violence from police and scary pro-Israel mobs disrupted graduate students’ ability to do their jobs. We spoke with a member of UAW local 4811, which represents University of California students, about what it was like and why her union filed unfair labor practice charges related to the protests including punishing student workers through arrests and suspensions, and why they decided to go on strike this spring.
Using a rolling strike strategy like autoworkers did back in September 2023, the student workers called on different UC schools to join the strike seemingly at random, keeping administrations on their toes.
As the union struck for complaints related to student protest crackdowns, the UC system fired back, calling the strike illegal, and leading to a challenge in court. This is a great reminder that the left shouldn’t write off college campuses in their organizing, and that 48,000 employees standing up for Palestine is a massive victory in and of itself.
