16:33Now PlayingDoes Walz joining the ticket energize you? Many progressives are thrilled. After weeks of deliberations and meetings and speculation, Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential pick. Walz was far and away the most progressive politician in the running to be with Harris, and his nomination seems like a nod to the Democratic base that has lost so much faith in the Biden Administration over issues ranging from Gaza to police reform.
Walz is a vet, a former teacher and Congressperson. As governor of Minnesota he oversaw a smorgusborg of progressive policies enacted with a narrow majority in the legislature. They include universal school meals, paid family and medical leave, legalizing recreational marijuana, allowing formerly incarcerated people to vote, a child tax credit and a 2040 carbon neutral pledge.
Moreover, he Walz is simultaneously warm while also sharp against MAGA. He’s the person who labeled Trump cultists “weird” for being obsessed with what’s in your pants and who you sleep with and whether you have a family. It’s a word that’s triggered the right and impressed Democrats who rarely come up with catchy lines of attack against an all-too-easy target.
