11:52Now PlayingDonald Trump once called cryptocurrency “a scam.” Now, he’s shilling as ‘Big Crypto’ is quickly shaping our political system.
“I am not a fan of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies,” Trump said in 2019. But then this month, the former president spoke at the Bitcoin Conference in Nashville. Or perhaps he was speaking to his newfound donors. Trump recently made an approximate $21 million at a crypto fundraiser where seats sold for $800,000 a person.
“Have a good time with your Bitcoin, and your crypto, and everything else that you’re playing with,” Trump told convention goers after calling for America to become the “crypto capital of the planet.” Though the former president’s switch up on digital currencies may seem confusing at first, once you begin to measure the industry's impact on our political system, all becomes clear.
Back in 2022, the now disgraced Sam Bankman Fried donated big to defeat more left-wing Democrats. Now in 2024, a new cryptocurrency Super PAC, Fairshake, is the largest Super PAC by donations. As Fairshake plans to boost members of Congress it sees as favorable to the industry, it wouldn’t be surprising if Trump and his team are trying to get in on their whopping $200,000,000.
