This past week, a judge in Georgia invalidated rules proposed by Trump-supporting Republicans who control the state election board. “No election superintendent (or member of a board of elections and registration) may refuse to certify or abstain from certifying election results under any circumstance.”
In 2020, Fulton County was at the center of Trump’s plan to overturn the election. This ruling is an attempt to put a stop to unnecessary challenges to election results. “If election superintendents were, as Plaintiff urges, free to play investigator, prosecutor, jury, and judge and so—because of a unilateral determination of error or fraud—refuse to certify election results, Georgia voters would be silenced,” wrote the judge.
It might sound mundane, however the practice of hand-counting to certify election results can add untold hours to the voting process, meaning that the race can’t be called till weeks later, leaving plenty of room for Trump to claim election victory.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, Representative Jamie Raskin is sowing the seeds of being skeptical of a Trump victory. “Trump and his followers have tried to use fraud, deceit, lies, coercion, trickery, voter suppression and mass insurrectionary violence to seize power against the rules of our constitutional order,” Raskin told Fox, and refused to say for certain whether he’d certify a Trump victory. Regardless, it appears that “certifying election results” could play a huge role in November’s election.
