In the weeks leading up till the election, Republican surrogates and JD Vance himself are on the campaign trail absolutely failing to win over women's votes. One interesting character re-inserting himself into the zeitgeist is Harrison Butker. Butker might have made a name for himself as a mediocre football kicker, but he’s more notorious for his gender essentialist and patriarchal graduation speech. In a recent interview stumping for Senator Josh Hawley, he reiterated his comments about how women need to get out of men’s way and leave the workforce so that they can raise children and make sandwiches. Very compelling party line!
It seems as though MAGA is giving up On women voters and banking on bros.
Meanwhile, JD Vance was put on the spot about abortion, one of the number issues for young women voters, one of the blocs Republicans are struggling to win over. JD Vance is an extremist when it comes to abortion, thinking that women should not have any reproductive autonomy, and that forced birth should be mandated by law in all 50 states.
His views haven’t changed, but he is now aware of how electorally toxic his beliefs are to the Trump campaign. Now both Vance and Trump are trying to backtrack on their support for a national abortion ban, when running for his Ohio Senate seat in 2022, Vance supported a national abortion ban without exceptions. Let’s not let him erase that history.
