21:01Now PlayingDonald Trump spent years telling Americans that tariffs would protect American producers.
Now beef prices have become so expensive that his administration is temporarily easing tariff barriers to bring more imported ground beef into the United States — and American cattle ranchers are furious.
The problem is that there isn't an easy solution.
America's cattle herd is near historic lows. Cattle prices have soared. Beef has become increasingly difficult for ordinary families to afford. Meatpacking companies are struggling, plants are closing, and thousands of workers have already been affected.
American consumers desperately need some relief.
But Trump's solution creates another problem.
Bringing cheaper foreign beef into the country could help put downward pressure on consumer prices, but cattle producers argue that it could also undercut American ranchers just as they're trying to rebuild the domestic herd.
And some Republicans and conservative ranching organizations are openly pushing back against the administration.
In today's video, we're looking at how America's beef industry got into this mess, why Trump is backing away from part of his tariff strategy, why cattle ranchers are angry, and what happens when the simple promise of blanket tariffs finally collides with the complicated reality of America's food supply.
Because tariffs sound easy when they're a campaign slogan.
They're considerably more complicated when Americans can't afford dinner.
