8:18Now PlayingOn Monday morning, July 13, a 26-year-old man named Joan Sebastian Guerrero was driving to work in Biddeford, Maine. He was a husband and the father of a 3-year-old daughter. He was work-authorized and had a Social Security number. By the end of the morning he was dead in an intersection, shot by a federal immigration agent while his wife watched.
The agents were not wearing body cameras. And the government's account of why he died has already changed. Senator Angus King spoke with DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin twice — the first time, Guerrero had "weaponized" his vehicle and was the target; after the second, King's office said he was not the target of the warrant.
DHS named this operation "Catch of the Day." It is at least the 9th killing from an encounter with federal immigration officers since the crackdown began — and the 2nd in a single week, after Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed in Houston on July 7. In Maine, the share of ICE arrestees with any criminal record has fallen from 69% to 45%. The dragnet got wider, not more targeted.
