He Told Haitians Trump Would Be Their 'Champion.' Trump Is Deporting Them

Reverend Daniel Ulysse, head of the Haitian American Republican Caucus, helped marshal Haitian-American support for Donald Trump because, in his own words, many believed Trump would help Haiti and be Haiti's "greatest champion."

Now more than 300,000 Haitian TPS holders are facing the loss of their protection and possible removal to a country gripped by political collapse, gang violence, and a humanitarian crisis.

The warnings were not hidden. They were on the record for years.

In 2018, Trump called Haiti a "shithole country" in the Oval Office. He denied saying it, pushed back on the coverage — and then in 2025 confirmed it himself. During the 2024 campaign, he and JD Vance spread the racist lie that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were eating people's pets.

And he claimed he knew nothing about Project 2025, even as its architect Russ Vought returned to run the Office of Management and Budget and the administration adopted its agenda — including the end of TPS.

This is a man with a documented record of treating non-white communities as disposable, from Haiti to Puerto Rico.

The Haitian community deserves sympathy. They are facing the consequences of a policy they did not create.

The leader who told them Trump would protect Haiti gets a different response: he was warned for years, he vouched anyway, and he supported the very leopards that are now eating his community's face.
