The former City Council President became the first Black and first woman mayor of the city after Marty Walsh was confirmed as the U.S. Secretary of Labor. Janey was sworn into office on Wednesday in a historic moment. Ayanna Pressley, Massachusetts' first Black Congresswoman, introduced Kimberly Budd, the first Black woman to lead the state's highest court. Budd administered the oath of office to Janey. The fourth-generation Boston resident was elected to the Boston City Council in 2017 and in 2020, she became the president of the most diverse city council in Boston's history.
