1:23Now PlayingA recently released study used 100 officers and 200 audio clips to confirm that Black drivers receive less respect from police officers during traffic stops.
The news came as no surprise to “Start Your Day” guest hosts Shannon LaNier and Bofta Yimam. Black drivers are more likely to hear the words, “dude,” “bro” and “hands on the wheel” during these stops, LaNier noted.
“We know the disrespect happens, we know that harassment happens, we know all of those things,” said Yimam, as LaNier nodded in agreeance. “I really do think men get the brunt of it, Black men [especially]. If you have siblings and loved ones, you know the stories you’ve gone through probably, everyone’s gone through. It's just not a secret.” The pair agreed that a lot of police training and reform is needed to reduce this, though drivers may never be able to avoid it completely.
