There have been 100,000 new COVID-19 infections reported a day, which is the highest average since February. The Delta variant is fueling the surge and it's racing through the unvaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People who are fully vaccinated are also catching COVID-19 in what is known as breakthrough cases. The CDC reports that more than 99.9% of breakthrough cases do not result in hospitalization or death. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, joins "Start Your Day" with Mike Hill to discuss the latest news in the ongoing fight against COVID-19.
Dr. Fauci says it's frustrating that the public health crisis is being politicized. Citing the high levels of COVID-19 cases in states led by Republican leaders, he says, "We have what it takes to end this if we just implement it."
