3:50Now Playing“Start Your Day” guest hosts Shannon LaNier and Mike Hill gave praise to the United States, for dominating the Olympics for the 29th year in a row, bringing home 113 overall medals.
The hosts agreed that the biggest story coming out of this year’s Olympics is the fact that mental health was put on a world stage, with Simone Biles withdrawing from several events and Naomi Osaka making her tennis return after pulling out from the French Open. “For those who thought, ‘Oh athletes are above that, they must overcome it, they must be strong, they must compete regardless of what they’re going through.’ No, that affects your health,” said LaNier. “Your mental health is just as important, if not more important, than all the medals and all the awards.”
LaNier added that if Biles would’ve competed in her condition, she could’ve injured herself and ultimately ended her career or her life. Hill also gave kudos to the competing and supporting athletes for taking mental health seriously and standing beside Biles throughout the competition. LaNier and Hill gave special nods to the “remarkable” Allyson Felix, who was previously dropped from Nike and has gone on to become the most-decorated US track and field athlete of all time. Men’s basketball winning their fourth straight championship, women’s basketball winning their seventh championship and the first Black female wrestler taking home a winning title was also of special note.
