Mayoral Nominee India Walton Brings Power to Buffalo

Democratic socialist India Walton, who had a child at 14 and went on to earn her GED and nursing degree, has beat a four-time incumbent Democrat in Buffalo’s mayoral primaries.

Walton, who is running as a Democratic socialist, was the topic of Sharon Reed and Mike Hill’s conversation on “Start Your Day.” Reed called the mayoral nominee a “real one who is unapologetic in her viewpoint and agenda.” Walton’s key points include home ownership and increasing revenue for the less fortunate. She was recently a guest on “Black News Tonight” with Marc Lamont Hill, where she shared that she’s making moves for the “nobodies” who have been forgotten and long been unseen, unheard, unappreciated, extracted from and exploited. She added that there’s an image that political leadership has to be perfect, but the people who are most equipped to lead are the ones closer to the problem because they have been there before. “I think the best politicians are the ones who know the people because they are the people, and they know what the people need,” said Hill, with both he and Reed adding that they’re a fan. “I’m for whoever builds upon a life and makes the most of it, because you only got one,” said Reed, adding that there’s value in hunger and you can’t know happiness if you never knew pain. The hosts agreed that though they can’t vote in the race, they’re excited to support Walton and see what she has in store for the city.
