Dec 4, 20212:23Now PlayingOn this day in 1847, famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass distributed the first issue of “The North Star,” an anti-slavery newspaper.
It was very important to Blacks seeking freedom from enslavement as it helped them chart a path northward.
Many enslaved people were illiterate, but they learned to read to stars. “The North Star” in particular would later be popularized in Black folk songs and immortalized in the culture.
The weekly issues highlighted horrors of slavery and lobbied for its swift abolishment in the United States. It also stressed the importance of Black self-reliance and responsibility.
