Woman Arrested for DUI After Driving Friends Home in Pullman, WA

On December 3, 2023 at approximately 2:48 AM, Officer Darren Romero with the Pullman Police Department observed a 2009 Chrysler Sebring fail to turn into the closest lane from NE Valley Road on to NE Stadium Way. Officer Romero activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, and the vehicle pulled stopped in the McDonald’s parking lot at 400 NE Stadium Way. He proceeded to make contact with the driver, who was identified as 26-year-old Danaijah.

As he was speaking with Danaijah, he detected the odor of alcohol, and she initially admitted to consuming 2 shots. Around this time, Officer Shellabarger also arrived on scene to assst. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Officer Romero asked Danaijah to exit the vehicle and offered her an opportunity to participate in field sobriety exercises.

Danaijah exited the vehicle and agreed to perform field sobriety exercises. The first field sobriety exercise was the horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN) test. The second field sobriety test was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Danaijah did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and she turned improperly. The final field sobriety exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Danaijah failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and used her arms for balance.

After the field sobriety exercises were complete, Officer Romero asked Danaijah if she would be willing to take a preliminary breath test (PBT), and Danaijah agreed to do so. As they were waiting for the PBT results, Danaijah admitted to consuming 3 or 4 shots approximately two hours prior. The results of the PBT indicated a BAC of 0.152%, which is almost double the legal limit of 0.08%.

Based on her traffic infraction, the odor of alcohol, her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, the results of the PBT, Officer Romero placed Danaijah under arrest for driving under the influence. Danaijah was placed in the patrol car and transported to the Pullman Police Department for further processing. Once they were at police HQ, Officer Romero read Danaijah her Miranda rights as well as the Implied Consent Warning, and she agreed to submit breath samples for testing. After the breathalyzer was administered, her Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.123% (lowest IR result).

After Officer Romero was finished with administering the breathalyzer, he placed Danaijah in a cell. After a brief holding period, Danaijah was removed from the cell to be photographed and fingerprinted. She had to spend some more time in the cell until the morning shift officers arrived. Eventually, Officer Padrta returned her belongings to her and she was released with a summons to appear in court. Officer Romero cited Danaijah under RCW 46.61.502 for driving under the influence.
