2:19Now Playing► On April 4, 2016, a Bell 206L sightseeing helicopter operated by Smokey Mountain Helicopters crashed into terrain and erupted into flames in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. All five people aboard the helicopter were killed in the crash and subsequent fire.
NBC affiliate WSMV asked Baum Hedlund aviation attorney Ronald L.M. Goldman to discuss the tragic crash, specifically what issues he has seen in Bell 206 helicopter crashes. Goldman, who has represented victims in dozens hundreds of aviation lawsuits, says these tourist helicopter rides come with more risk than he’d like.
“We have found that in an effort to give passengers a more exciting ride, risks were taken that probably shouldn’t have been,” says Goldman of sightseeing helicopters. In trying to give passengers a greater thrill, Goldman has seen a number of sightseeing helicopter operators “get themselves into problems with tricky winds or other issues that they can’t recover from.”
As for the Bell 206 itself, Goldman says the model is reasonably safe, but has found problems in past cases with the aircraft’s design and maintenance. In particular, Goldman says the integrity of the Bell 206 gas tank is a big issue.
“We concern ourselves not only with why did the helicopter crash, but why did the people have to die, and especially, why did they have to suffer the horror of being burned alive.”
